Our Directors

We are extremely proud of our reputation, and the “repeat business” model on which RBA is founded. Our practice is built not only on technical proficiency and service, but also on the solid and enduring relationships we establish with our Clients and professional peers alike.

RBA Directors

Our “die for the Client” ethos is legendary in the marketplace, and we will always challenge the brief – we will never be passive in our role.

We are acutely aware that our business is built upon the talented staff we employ, and that these individuals are the reason that our Clients choose to work with us.

Richard graduated from Newcastle Polytechnic in 1977 and became an Associate of the RICS in 1980. Having set up RBA in 1985, he achieved Fellow status in 1992.

Richard is a well known and highly respected member of the regional business community, and has received the coveted ‘Property Personality of the Year’ award in the Yorkshire Region.

In his current role as Chairman, Richard still offers significant support to the team in making key strategic and management decisions and also provides an instantly recognisable figurehead within the local property market.

When away from the office (and his other property and business interests) Richard enjoys outdoor pursuits including clay pigeon shooting, where he can relax and enjoy the company of his closest friends.

Billy qualified in 1994 having graduated from Napier Polytechnic. He joined Richard Boothroyd & Associates in 1998, becoming an Associate in 2000 and a Director in 2004.

Together with his role as Managing Director, Billy is still very much involved in the day to day running of our projects, particularly in the private development and food industry sectors.

He was heavily involved as Project Manager for Europe’s largest fresh milk dairy and has a wealth of experience, acting as Employer’s Agent and Quantity Surveyor on some of RBA’s larger projects.

Away from project delivery, Billy’s main focus is ensuring that support is provided to enable our ESG agenda to be successfully achieved.

Billy is married with three grown up children and when work and family commitments allow, he can often be found casting a fly on a quiet river, eternally hopeful that he will catch a salmon.

Richard qualified in 1997, having graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University in 1996. Richard joined the practice in 1999, becoming an Associate in 2000 and a Director in 2004.

Richard’s experience covers most industry sectors, with emphasis on commercial and industrial development for private developers. Richard has completed several laboratory refurbishment schemes and has overall responsibility for current science park projects within the office. He is at ease in Project Management, Employer’s Agent or traditional Quantity Surveyor functions, and takes pride in providing added value to the Client team in all roles.

Richard is married with two grown up children (and a Labrador), and much of his free time is taken up in enjoying family life. He does however have a keen interest in music and sport, both as a spectator and participant. Richard also enjoys foreign travel when time permits.

Gareth joined RBA in 2002, and during his time at the practice he has been responsible for the successful delivery of numerous high profile and high value projects across several industry sectors.

Gareth is comfortable in the role of PM, Employer’s Agent or Quantity Surveyor, and is renowned for his methodical approach and his unrelenting attention to detail.   In recent times Gareth has safely delivered several large scale residential projects, the complex Opera North theatre in Leeds, and acts for Leeds United on many of their construction projects.

Gareth offers significant technical surveying expertise and is often consulted and relied upon by junior and senior team members alike.

Gareth is married with three children, but finds time between his busy work and family commitments to play football with long standing friends.

Tom joined RBA in 2007, and was appointed as a Director of the practice in 2018. He graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University in 2005 with a First Class Honours degree and since then has worked on a number of the practice’s most challenging schemes, with a particular focus on the commercial, residential and leisure sectors.  Tom is also engaged on a number of bespoke private residential projects – and brings his expertise to deliver luxury dwellings nationwide.

Tom is comfortable undertaking the “traditional” Quantity Surveying function but particularly enjoys being able to bring additional value to projects when acting as Employer’s Agent and/or Project Manager.

Away from the office Tom enjoys spending time with his wife and family and is a self professed sports fanatic with a particular interest in football, rugby league and cricket, visiting Elland Road whenever he can.

Michael joined RBA in 2013 as a Graduate Surveyor, and after successive promotions was made a Director in 2022.

Michael gained his degree qualification through a day release programme, where he was able to obtain practical experience alongside his academic studies – and after obtaining his degree he successfully completed the RICS APC.  He now plays a key role in supporting and mentoring RBA’s junior staff members enrolled on the APC programme.

Michael has worked with a number of clients, in sectors including retail, commercial offices, life sciences and large scale residential developments.

In 2022, Michael enrolled at Leeds Business School, undertaking a course in Executive Leadership.  He now takes a leading role in digital transformation, sustainability, and corporate governance.  Michael has lead on RBA’s sustainability strategy, where he oversees action on environmental and social value issues as the business strives to meet the long-term goals it has set.

In his spare time, Michael enjoys coaching his son’s football team, North Ferriby FC, and taking his dog, Wilson out for long walks with his wife and two children.
